FLW Everstart Potomac River Bass Fishing Tournament Report June 2013, Day 2:
On Day 2, I had thoughts of switching things up and fishing more hard cover spots like docks, rip rap and barges. All very good places after storms blow in. My boat launch number just was not early enough to convince me to come off the successful grass bed bites I had been on for the whole month of June.
I stuck with my original game plan and started out fishing on a little grass bed and caught a couple bass first thing on My Customized Buckeye Swim Jig. Then I slowed my presentation way down in the same grass bed and caught three bass in a row on a soft plastic stick bait.
This move nearly paid off, I tied into something HUGE while fishing slow!!! Not really sure what it was maybe a carp, catfish, rockfish or snakehead. My best guess is it was probably a giant snakehead because it snapped the 8lb test I was using on my soft plastic stick bait real easy.
Up to this point, all the bass landed on Day 2 where on the smaller side. I was itch'n to find some bigger bass, so I moved out to the main river where I started running south hitting all the major grass beds like Blue Banks, Arkendale Flats, Fish Camp in Brents Marsh, Aucapo Beach, Aquia Creek.
I caught a few bass on the way down south but nothing to keep me in one spot for to long. I decided to turn the boat around and start heading north back towards the ramp. Flipping a beaver style bait with a 3/4 oz Eco Pro Tungsten weight and 1/2 oz Buckeye Flippin Jig much of the way back north.
Stopping at every grass bed I could find. I tried a few different baits here and there, Topwater Frog, Gambler Big EZ Swimbait and bladed swim jig w/ custom Gambler skirt. Not much luck, my mind was set on throwing My Custom Buckeye Swim Jigs and I knew just the place it was working the best.
Many of the grass beds on the main river were muddy from the large amount of rain we have been getting. Add into the mix several hyper active pleasure boaters that for some reason never seem to run out of gas? and well, you get the picture.
Not to worry my friends, I had an ace up my sleeve. No, not the Ace or the Fat Ace soft plastic stick bait from Gambler Lures. The trump card I was holding was the knowledge that at precisely 1:30. I had a HOT SPOT in the Mattawoman that has been producing a FAST limit of bass for me every tournament I fished in this month.
( HOT POTOMAC RIVER FISHING SPOT ALERT )
In Mattawoman, behind an Island is where I have been whacking them on My Customized Buckeye Swim Jig everyday at 1:30. Have I finally found it? Crystal clear water, healthy grass beds and an endless supply of hungry bass. No matter the Moon, Tide or Weather conditions??? Sorry fans...
If that sounded to good to be true? you would have guessed correctly. Today my luck ran out. By the time I arrived on one of my hottest spots on the entire Potomac River the water looked like Yoo-hoo chocolate drink. I did get some hits on My Customized Buckeye Swim Jig but they were missing it because they could not see it. ( maybe I was swimming it to fast )
For the most part, it took a lot to ruin my HOT SPOT. A "Super Moon", Flood Tides, High Winds, Heavy Rains, Pleasure Boaters, ect. I did wind up with a 5 bass limit on day 2 good for 7 lbs and 09 oz.
Fishing was off a bit this week but I managed to catch my 5 bass limit both days here on the Potomac River. My total weight for this FLW Everstart Potomac River tournament was 16 lbs 12 oz good for a 97th place finish in this tournament.
Looking back, I'd say I probably should have looked for a SLOW limit of bass each day. That's where the angling grapevine had the larger bass coming from.
Fishing shallow or deep, sounds like the BIGGEST BASS where on the bottom and moving REAL SLOW during the first & second day after the pre - tournament storm blew through.
Til next time,
Melvin Smitson
