Marshyhope Creek Bass Fishing Report Sept 7th 2013:
Welcome back bass fishing fans! Today, I have an exciting Marshyhope Creek bass fishing report from September 7th 2013. Marshyhope Bassmasters held their annual open team bass fishing tournament that me and my Dad fished.
We launched the boat out of the ramp located in Federalsburg, Maryland and headed down stream. It was very foggy and we could barely make our way safely thru the trees.
Finally we decided to stall for time and let the fog lift while we popped into Peggy's hole. Great move in theory but no dice. We caught 1 dink and fired up the 250 hp mercury, the fog had lifted and the outboard was screaming up on full trim.
I did not let off the Hot Foot pedal until we reached Seaford around a half our later. Once we got there we started fishing a few trees, rip rap, bulk heads and docks. My dad had ventured to Seaford earlier in the week and mentioned that he might be onto something.
In 4 hours of pre - fishing in and around Seaford my Dad told me he had landed 25 largemouth bass total, 15 keepers but nothing over 2 pounds. Most of those bass where caught on a wacky rigged Gambler Ace or a Texas Rigged Gambler Ace.
That alone was not what got me to fill up my gas tank and make the Journey. What got me to make the trip was a brand new fishing tale from a salty o'l fishermen ( Dad ). About a can't miss "hot spot" that 9.9 out of 10 anglers would drive by without a second glance.
With a very emphatic guarantee that he had found the perfect bait for this "hot spot." A bait so perfect that he had landed 5 keepers on 5 consecutive cast from this overlooked heaven of a fishing hole in less than 10 minutes.
To see and hear a man nearly 70 years of age act so youthful and full of enthusiasm over his new found discovery was just to much for me to ignore. My dad has seen and fished a lot of so called "hot spots" that never panned out. He has without a doubt, seen even more "hot baits" come and go over the years. He is usually very laid back, so this enthusiasm level he's displaying is totally off the charts for him.
I'm here to verify that everything he told me was TRUE! We fished trees, rip rap, bulk heads and docks and had our limit several times over using wacky rigs and Texas rig soft plastic stick baits.
The bass we were catching were nothing to write home about so I kept asking him where the "hot spot" was?, When are we going to the "hot spot?" and What the heck does this "hot bait" of his look like?
Keep fishing it's not time he said! Really, I drove all the way to Seaford and skipped who knows how many "hot spots" of my own to hear keep fishing it's not time!?!?
I had just about had enough of all these 2 pounders we are catching. Times running out on this bass fishing tournament, I'm starting to doubt my o'l man. Then finally he said let's go, it's time to fish the HOT SPOT!!!
We pulled up on this ordinary looking fishing hole and he said stop the boat this is it. This is the spot that's going to win us first place in this tournament today. I'm looking at this spot thinking we are in trouble if this is the "hot spot".
By this time we had about an hour left in the tournament. Leaving us half hour to fish and half hour to get back to the ramp in Federalsburg.
I shut the outboard engine off, made my way up to the front of the boat. Before I could reach down and grab my rod. I kid you not bass fishing fans, on his very first cast, bang he ties into a 3 pound largemouth bass with his "hot bait" but it shakes it's way off as it was dancing on top the water. On his second cast, bang 4 pound largemouth bass on the "hot bait" and it get's off right at the boat.
I said to him, Dad let me check your hooks? Two fish on two fish lost? Everything looks alright, so he throws his "hot bait" back out and on his third cast with only few minutes of fishing time left. KA' BOOM another bass over 4 pounds gets on and it happens again. It get's off at the boat just out of reach of the net?!?!?!
Now we are both scratching our heads and times up. So we put away our fishing gear and we hustled back to the ramp to weigh our bag of fish in. Our 5 bass limit weighed in at 8 lbs 15 oz and the winning weight on the day was right around 11 lbs. I reckon we came in around 4th or 5th place for the tournament unofficially.
Not bad for a 17 boat tournament on Marshyhope Creek. Now, normally I would be hot under the collar beyond belief at all the things that went wrong today as we blew our shot at first place. For some reason, today It just felt like Christmas with all the fun, excitement and joy I saw in my Dads eyes as everything he told me about his "hot spot" and "hot bait" came to fruition. I think three words sum this trip up the best.
Thank you Megabass!!!
