Pro angler Melvin Smitson is in reach for a Rayovac FLW Series championship birth! After two tournaments Melvin sits in 63rd place in AOY point standings and his arrow is pointed upwards in a hurry. After the first tournament on the Potomac River, Maryland Melvin was in 90th place. Pro Angler Melvin Smitson Personal Best Largemouth Bass 7lb .45oz (James River, 2014)
First things first, back to the James River, Virginia August 21st - 23rd for the final Rayovac FLW Series tournament of the 2014 season. Otherwise known as the place Melvin reeled in his personal best Largemouth bass back in spring of 2014.
We caught up with Melvin and this is what he has to say about his chances on making the Rayovac FLW Series Championship cut...
"First off, I would like to thank FLW for adding a much needed Championship to The Rayovac Series this year. Having a championship to fish for at the end of the year is great for the fans, it's great for the sponsors and it's great for an anglers confidence at the end of the season. This championship really has my motor running at a high level this week heading back down to the James River. I'm itching to get back there, I caught my personal best largemouth bass 7 lb .45 oz on the James in the spring along with several other close to that size during the Rayovac FLW Series practice."
Does being 30 plus points off championship pace heading into the last tournament of the year make you want to throw in the white towel?
"NO, it's the extreme opposite for me. I was fortunate enough to have fished my rookie season last year on the Rayovac level and happened to finish in 30th place on the season. That in itself is comforting from a big picture view, I was 150 best angler in the nation on the Rayovac level in 2013. I take a lot of pride in that but what I learned during the course of my rookie year was that a 30 +/- point jump is AOY point standings on the Rayovac FLW Series level is very do - able. It helps me sleep at night knowing first hand that I have been there and done that already."
What would making the championship cut mean to you?
"Making the championship cut would be a huge step in the right direction as far as fishing my way up to FLW TOUR level goes. In the short term qualifying for this years championship can send a clear message out to all my family, friends, fans and sponsors that I'm worth following and rooting for! It takes a lot to make it on this level of bass fishing but I have surrounded myself with a lot of great folk's and great things can happen when you have a solid supporting cast around you in this sport."
