Smitson Takes 21st Place In FLW Everstart On Chesapeake Bay!
Local Pro Melvin Smitson ( Baltimore, Maryland ) Takes 21st Place In FLW Everstart On Chesapeake Bay! After a see-saw practice period professional angler Melvin Smitson pulls off a strong finish on day 2 of the FLW Everstart tournament on the Chesapeake Bay.
"I was very pleased about the way I finished out the tournament today! I practiced two days for this event, on the first day I got skunked and on the second day I had 17 lbs in the box before 9 A.M. I felt pretty good about placing well in the event though because I have had some pretty good weight limits recently in local Chesapeake Bay tournaments."
Melvin said he concentrated on docks in the Northeast on day 1 but had a lot of company he was not expecting which he said might have kept his day 1 weight totals down ( 8 lbs xx ozs ). After realizing his predicament he moved out and fished the flat's out in front of Northeast River. Eventually running crossed the Chesapeake Bay to fish some docks on the Havre De Grace side of town.
"I zeroed out on the Susquehanna flats in my first day of practice and switched to docks and hard cover on day 2 of practice with better results. I think everybody had the same idea. I must have had 30 boats fishing around the docks in the Northeast River with me on day 1 of the tournament."
Melvin's baits of choice for day one of the FLW Everstart tournament where Buckeye Flipp'n Jigs, Buckeye Swim Jig, Buckeye Mop Jigs, Bladed swim jigs, Eco Pro Tungsten Worm Weights, Gambler Ribbon Tail Worms, War Eagle Spinner Baits, Hollow Topwater Frogs and Twin Tail Grubs.
Water conditions were favorable with stained water in the Northeast River and clear water out on the flats in front of the Northeast River with a 1 foot chop. ( Picture of Northeast River largemouth bass from practice)

On day 2 of this FLW Everstart tournament on the Chesapeake Bay. A cold front moved into the area packing 25 - 30 mph winds and a 3 foot - 4 chop out on the open bay. Bringing muddier waters with it.
Figuring an already crowded Northeast River would now be packed to the gills due to in climate weather. Melvin decided to roll the dice and make a 45 minute run headed down the Chesapeake Bay, south past Pooles Island. Armed with soft plastic stick baits, 20 lb braid and the ultimate confidence in his presentation. Led Melvin into a ripp'n lips and taken names later mode for the rest of day 2.
"I have lost a lot of "money fish" on 8lb fluorocarbon over the past few seasons. So I decided to go ahead and make a switch to braid for more control. I feel like it gives me a little more power when I'm flipp'n the BIG BASS in the boat with my Big Bear Rods."
The move seems to have payed off. Melvin wound up with 14 plus lbs. While catching 5 keepers in just a few minutes off one 100 yard stretch of shoreline.
"We might have just been in the right place at the right time today. As my Co - Angler was flipp'n a jig and soft plastic crawdad bait and caught 14 plus lbs himself. Just as I thought it was going to be a 20+ lb day, the wind started picking up a blew the tide out around 5 feet. Wrecking our fishing hole and almost leaving us high and dry on a mud flat for the rest of the day. Thankfully, we got out around the mud flat and into deeper water just in time to make the long run back to the ramp!" ~ Said Smitson
Stay tuned to find out how high 54th place Melvin Smitson travels up in the "Angler Of The Year" standings. ( FLW Everstart Northern Division ). This concludes this Chesapeake Bay bass fishing report.
