Professional angler Melvin Smitson takes 4th place on Potomac River April 13 2014! Today Delaware Bass Federation held it'd first bass fishing tournament of the 2014 season on the Potomac River. Local pro Melvin Smitson (Baltimore, Maryland) and his partner (Dad) had a great outing with a 5 bass limit and a total weight of 13 lbs 13 ozs, good enough to take 4th place on the day.

Today's Delaware Bass Federation Nation open team buddy tournament fielded 18 boats with the air temperature climbing rapidly from the mid 50's first thing in the morning up past 80 degrees by weigh - in time. Water clarity was around 6 inches with waves reaching 2 - 3 ft on the main river after 10 am. (20 + mile per hour winds)

"I had around a dozen or so largemouth bass in the boat today. It's been a up and down spring season so far but today I felt like I was getting dialed in out there. My partner (Dad) and I started off heading south from Mattawomen Creek, the water laid down for us with a 3 inch chop and a little bit a fog. My Mercury Optimax 250 HP Outboard Motor and Furry Prop was just eating up that water until we got to our first fishing spot. We pulled up on a hole that had a rocky shoreline with about 4 ft of water on an outgoing tide. This HOT SPOT was about 1/2 mile wide and we just kept going back and forth with my Motor Guide trolling motor. My first bass came on a Rat-L-Trap ( MY BIGGEST BASS 3 lbs 7 ozs ) then we just kept catching a bass here and there on a few different baits. (Rat-L-Trap, Shallow Crankbaits, Suspending Stick Baits, Bladed Swim Jigs/ w Gambler EZ swimmer trailers). My partner (Dad) added a couple keepers to our total and before you know it we had our limit before Ten O'clock." ~ Melvin Smitson
